Firefighter/EMT training

 

 

Trainee Period

By the end of the first year, the Trainee must successfully complete FF/EMT Trainee test, Fire Recruit School and have a satisfactory Employee Performance Appraisal (EPA) in order to move to the full performance position of FF/EMT.

Probationary Period

After the Trainee period, the employee must successfully complete a probationary period. This probationary period is normally one (1) year, which may be extended to 18 months if necessary. All employees must pass a probationary test and have a satisfactory EPA in order to achieve permanent status.

After one year with the department, the Firefighter/EMT must enroll in Advanced Life Support training (at no cost to the employee) and obtain Commonwealth of Virginia Emergency Medical “I” Level certification.

Work Hours

The FF/EMT works an average of ten 24-hour shifts a month on a rotating basis. Reporting time is 7:00 a.m. The FF/EMT receives 10 paid holidays per year and Inauguration Day, but must work holidays when scheduled.

ACFD provides uniforms and equipment.
