Employment Policies

 

Pay

A new employee starts work within the pay range specified in the announcement. With satisfactory performance, employees are considered for periodic step increases up to the maximum of the range.

Merit System Ordinance

Employees in departments under the direction of the County Manager are in the Competitive Service and work under a Merit System Ordinance which is a plan for appointment, promotion, and separation of employees on the basis of merit.

Eligibility For Employment

Persons hired by the County are required to prove identity and eligibility to work in the U.S.

Pre-employment Medical Examination

Applicants must successfully meet required medical standards for the job in a medical examination conducted by County designated medical staff.

Background Check

A background check will be made on all applicants selected for employment. It may include checks of your criminal record, driving record, education, professional licenses and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Probationary Period

Newly appointed permanent employees and employees who are promoted serve a probationary period. This is considered part of the examination procedure. The duration of the probationary period is noted on the announcement.

Social Security and Workers Compensation

All employees are covered under the Old Age and Survivors Insurance section of the Social Security Act and are covered under the State Workers Compensation Act.

Promotional Pay Rule

Employees who are promoted will be paid at the closest step in the higher grade that gives the employee at least a 10% pay increase, or will be paid at the minimum rate of the higher grade, whichever is greater. However, the salary cannot go above the maximum for the new grade.

Reasonable Accommodation

Applicants with physical or mental disabilities may request reasonable accommodation throughout the selection process. This may include, but not be limited to, submitting an employment application in an alternative format, requesting a qualified interpreter or reader to take an oral or written examination, providing auditory or visual assistance devices, Braille or audio-tape. Smoking Policy

The County prohibits smoking in all County facilities and work spaces except in specifically designated areas authorized by the County Manager.

Direct Deposit

All new employees receive their pay through direct deposit to their account at a financial institution.

Safety And Security

Each employee is issued and required to wear an identification card. Employees may also be required to wear personal protective equipment in the performance of their duties.

Competitive Service Employment Discrimination Appeal Procedures

An applicant who is not a current County employee who believes that he/she has been discriminated against in the employment process may contact the County EEO Investigator in the Human Rights Commission Office (703-228-3929) and/or may appeal in writing to the Civil Service Commission (703-228-3966). An applicant who is currently employed by the County may contact the EEO Investigator and/or file a grievance in accordance with Administrative Regulation 2.7, Chapters 12 & 19. Employees who have questions about the grievance procedure or Arlington County personnel policies and procedures may contact the Employee Advisor at (703-228-7054). Employment discrimination appeals to the Civil Service Commission or initiation of the County grievance procedure must occur within 20 calendar days of the event giving rise to the appeal.
