RG 3: Arlington Hall, Collected Materials

Most of the materials came from alumnae and are in the form of yearbooks, newsletters, college catalogs, scrapbooks, photographs, and assorted ephemera, reflecting the use of Arlington Hall as a college. The rest of the material has been gathered from various sources over time, and reflects later uses of the property.

Contains the incomplete and unofficial records of the Arlington County Virginia School System. Materials include information on School Board candidates, architectural reports and site studies for school buildings, school personnel handbooks, salary and retirement information from the 1950s, reports of citizen advisory councils and task forces on instructional issues, 1950s through the 1970s, and many school publications including newsletters and clippings about Arlington schools, chiefly the 1950s through the 1970s.

RG 18: The Personal Papers of Barbara Marx, Collector

The collection includes personal papers, newsletters, meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, and ephemera. The collection reflects Ms. Marx's involvement and extensive interest in the Civil Rights movement, Arlington County school integration, educational issues and other community activities. Ms. Marx collected most of the materials housed in this group as a result of these interests and activities.

The personal papers described in this guide are those collected and generated by Elizabeth Pfohl Campbell of Arlington, Virginia. The materials arranged in this collection were generated or collected as a result of Mrs. Campbell's involvement in the Arlington County School Board, as well as her interests and activities in education and local politics.

Houses the official records of the Arlington, Virginia Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). The types of materials documenting the Branch's activities include: executive board and general meeting minutes, bylaws, financial records, correspondence, yearbooks and bulletins, reports to the regional and national AAUW, photographs, scrapbooks, clippings and other memorabilia.

RG 35: Records of the Arlington County Committee on the Status of Women

Contains incomplete records of the Arlington County Committee on the Status of Women, as collected by Alice Sufit, a member of the group during its formation year, 1973. In 1974 the County Board established a permanent 16-member advisory committee which was re-designated in 1980 as a permanent commission to advise the County on issues affecting women. The collection also contains agendas, minutes and reports from the committee and its subcommittee, 1973; background material, 1971-1975, on sex discrimination, particularly in education; the 1974 report of the committee; and some scattered minutes, 1974-1975 of the permanent committee, as well as some clippings. The records reflect Arlington citizens' concerns about women's rights in the 1970s.

Contains material generated and gathered by Marianne Karydes during her many years of participation with different Arlington County civic organizations and is a terrific collection to observe one citizens deep commitment to the Arlington community.

RG 52: The Personal Papers of Albert E. Dye

The Albert E. Dye collection consists of a small amount of material retrieved from 6036 Munson Hill Rd., Arlington, VA, the former residence of A.J. Dye. Much of the material relates to the Columbia Investment Corporation. This corporation consisted of Arlington businessmen who maintained joint ownership for the Columbia School property. Albert Dye served as the treasurer. These materials consist of fiscal reports including expenditures, profit distribution, and profit and loss summaries.

Contains material Miller created or gathered as a member of different civic organizations and as a politician.

RG 66: Personal Papers of Henry Gardner

Henry Gardner began his forty-two year career with the Arlington County Public School system as a special education teacher in 1956. He spent the majority of his career as the head of personnel. As the Assistant Superintendent, Gardner had responsibility for among other things, the overall management of employment, payroll, benefits, and the Employee Assistance Program. This collection contains material related to personnel issues in the Arlington County Public Schools including salary, desegregation and staffing, and discipline issues. There is also a file related to the predicted threat communism posed to the schools in the 1950s. One extremely useful tool housed in this collection is an index to the School Board Minutes. This index and the minute books are housed in the Virginia Room.

RG 70: The Personal Papers of Barnard D. Joy

The personal papers described in this guide were collected and generated by Dr. Barnard D. Joy of Arlington, Virginia in the course of his years of involvement in education in Virginia. Types of material include: minutes, correspondence, clippings, newsletters, published and unpublished reports, grant proposals, narrative and financial reports, and course outlines, lectures, and examinations.

RG 86: Records of the Mount Vernon Home Economists in Homemaking

Record Group 86 houses the official records of the Mount Vernon Home Economists in Homemaking. The goals of the organization were to support both the American and the Virginia Home Economists Association, to promote the profession of home economics, to keep up to date on new trends in the professional field, and to participate in appropriate community activities.

RG 111: Arlington Outdoor Education Association Records

The Arlington Outdoor Laboratory began in 1967 with the identification of 200 acres of land in Fauquier County that were ideal for an outdoor science facility for school children to learn and interact with nature. An outdoor lab for Arlington's school children was the dream of Dr. Phoebe Hall Knipling, an educator and supervisor of science education for Arlington County. The goal of the lab " . . .is to provide a facility and support a school program designed to give urban school children who live in Arlington, Virginia an opportunity to learn science, outdoor skills, arts, and humanities in an outdoor setting.". The records within this collection financial records, meeting minutes, correspondence, newspaper articles, fundraising activities, and the history of this impressive organization.

RG 140: Thomas and Torrill Floyd Personal Papers

Tom and Torrill Floyd were very active in local politics and county government. Torrill served on the School Board from 1978-1982, as a former president of the League of Women Voters, vice president of the Arlington Chapter of the AAUW, and as a member of Arlingtonians for a Better County (ABC) and the Committee of 100. Like his wife, Tom volunteered many hours within the Arlington community. At the time of his death, he served as the director of Arlington Retirement Housing Corporation and as the director of the Virginia Square Senior Services Corporation. Both Tom and Torrill were active in their church, the Unitarian Church of Arlington. They were killed in July of 1991 while on a trip in Norway. The collection has material related to Tom and Torrill’s work with the Arlington community.  The subjects include education, housing, and community organizations.  Within these subjects are materials they gathered such as reports, meetings minutes, newspaper articles, newsletters, and correspondence.
