SECTION A -- BUDGET SUMMARIES AND COUNTY PROFILE
FY 2006 POLICY PRIORITY PROPOSAL
Department(s): Police Department
Policy
Priority: Additional Motorcycle Officer
(1.0 FTE)
The increase in Arlington's residential and commercial
units have increased traffic and the need for traffic and parking enforcement. This is especially important in the context
of the WALKArlington initiative to create a safe, inviting and enjoyable
pedestrian environment. The Special
Operations Section motor officers enforce the enhanced crosswalk locations and
other pedestrian safety issues throughout the County. The motor officers also maintain a visible presence in and around
the bike trails and parks, aiding in the community's safe and enjoyable
experiences as pedestrians.
Also, in light of the
new Arlington County Special Events policy passed by the County Board on
September 18, 2004, raising the event threshold from $2,000 to $4,000, it is
anticipated that the Special Operations Section will be tasked with handling
even more events than currently required.
The recommended additional motor officer will augment the unit's ability
to safely handle the additional responsibilities.
