Sheriff

Administrative Division

Arlnigton County Court HouseThe Administrative Division provides financial analysis, annual budget preparation, human resources, training, information systems, background checks, and safety programs for the entire Sheriff's Office. Over 270 sworn and civilian staff are required to perform the core functions of court security, warrant service, corrections and transportation function mandated by State Statute.

Sworn staff (and civilian staff with direct inmate contact) undergo a rigorous hiring process to include written and performance testing, an extensive background investigation, a polygraph, physical examination and psychological testing to ensure staff meet the high expectations of the Sheriff and Arlington citizens. Contract staff, volunteers and temporary staff must also meet minimum standards to work in the Detention Facility and other secure areas in and around the Justice Center Complex. The Sheriff's Office enjoys an open testing process to ensure prospective employees have easy access to the hiring process. For more information check our "Jobs" page.

Once hired, staff are trained in the functions they will be expected to perform. For most staff, these training requirements include pre-service training, a 24 week basic training program and annual in-service refresher training. Deputy Sheriffs are certified in Law Enforcement, Corrections, Service of Civil Process and Warrants, and Courtroom and Courthouse Security.

Safety in the workplace is a significant concern for the Sheriff. A safety specialist performs numerous safety, security and health inspections. The safety specialist also ensures staff have appropriate access to operational emergency response equipment that may be used in the detention facility or to provide backup to law enforcement.
