Jail Industries

IWP's clearing debrisThe Jail Industries Program (JIP), was established within the Corrections Division of the Sheriff's Office in 1994 and is responsible for developing and providing work opportunities and employment training for inmates, while under the supervision of the Arlington County Sheriff's Office (ACSO). In carrying out this mission, the Jail Industries Manager pursues contracts which would provide opportunities for inmates to provide goods and services for County agencies, other government jurisdictions, and eligible non-profit organizations. These work opportunities allow the inmates involved in the program to experience real-life work situations and gain vocational skills, while benefiting the County and other local governments through labor and services provided at low cost.

Jail Industry Programs include:

  • Catering meals for the Department of Human Services (DHS) Residential Center
  • Joint clean-up projects with DPW and Inmate Work Program (IWP)
  • Park Maintenance Project - joint venture with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Resources (PRCR)
  • Bindery Shop - joint venture with the Arlington County Print Shop
  • Laundering blankets for the Homeless Shelter (seasonal) (DHS)
  • Job Shop - various short-term tasks: i.e. dry mounting pictures for the County Fair, stuffing envelopes for various County Agencies, making posters
