Please note that Arlington County adopted regulations for the placement of political signs on both private and public property in 2005. The ordinance allows temporary political signs on medians and would limit the number of signs to two (2) per candidate or issue per median strip segment. Signs are not to be place "Burma Shave" style one-after-another the length of a median stip.
In addition, time constraints on the placement of signs in the public right-of-way are limited to 31 consecutive days before an election. The signs are required to be removed within five (5) days after the election. The size of political signs should be no larger than 4.5 square feet and the height of the sign would be restricted to three (3) feet to improve driver visibility and pedestrian safety.
The ordinance was crafted with bipartisan support and it provides ample time and specific guidelines for signs to be displayed in the public right-of-way. The ordinance provides many opportunities for political expression on private property, which is the most accurate reflection of the amount of support for a candidate or issue and has less of an impact on the traffic, pedestrians, and aesthetics of the community.
