Another A+ for Arlington
In its annual review of government websites, the Sunshine Review has again given Arlington County an A+ for transparency. Sunshine Review analysts use a 10-point transparency checklist to assign a grade based upon the proactive disclosure of financial data, contact information, lobbying activity and a number of other items.
Parks Director Earns Certification
Dinesh Tiwari, director of Arlington County’s Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), recently earned the Certified Park and Recreation Executive (CPRE) certification granted by the National Certification Board, in conjunction with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). The CPRE program recognizes advanced skills and competencies related to the professional practice and delivery of park and recreation programs and services. (Jan. 2012)
Arlington Conservationist of the Year
The Northern Virginia Conservation Trust recognized Toby Smith for his efforts to create the 18-acre Long Bridge Park, from its former industrial use. Mr. Smith chaired the Long Bridge Park Design Advisory Committee. (2012)
Another "Gold Level Award" for Arlington
Arlington County Government has been designated as an American Heart Association "Gold Level Award" recipient for the third year in a row! The award comes through the County promoting an active and healthy environment for its employees in recognizing the importance of a healthy workplace and taking steps to create a culture of physical activity and well-being. (Nov. 2011)
Arlington Named #30 Best Bike City
Once again, Arlington has been named one of America's Top 50 Best Bike Cities, landing in the #30 spot. To make the Top 50, a city must also support a vibrant and diverse bike culture. It must have smart, savvy bike shops. (Nov. 2011)
Named #2 "Best City" in America
Bloomberg Finance and BusinessWeek named Arlington No. 2 in its rankings of "America's Best Cities," based on metrics such as school performance, green space and cultural amenities. "Home to numerous headquarters of companies and government agencies, this Washington D.C. suburb is a draw in its own right. The area is highly educated, with more than two-thirds of the population holding a college degree. Arlington has a median income level of $93,806, low levels of foreclosures, and the lowest unemployment among cities we ranked." (Sept. 2011)
