Parking in Arlington County

ARLINGTON COUNTY BOARD GUIDANCE ON PARKING FOR COMMERCIAL OFFICE BUILDINGS
At the Saturday, January 21, 2012 Board meeting, the County Manager examined the consequences of reduced parking requirements for certain development projects that provide enhanced Transportation Demand Management strategies consistent with Master Transportation Plan Policy 6.h. Specifically, the County Manager is required to develop a set of standards and methodologies that can be used to fully assess and mitigate the impacts attributable to a reduction of parking in particular site plan projects, and to report back to the Board in June 2012. Parking is a key piece of the transportation puzzle. As a limited resource that’s often in high demand, Arlington County manages on-street parking (over 53,000 spaces) to:
    - balance competing needs (transit, customers, residents, delivery vehicles),
    - move people and goods efficiently,
    - support business district vitality, and
    - create livable neighborhoods.
The majority of the off-street spaces within garages and surface lots (over 100,000 spaces) are owned, maintained and managed by the private sector. Arlington encourages the use of off-street parking through signage and promotional materials.
