U.S. Fire Administrator Declares National Fire Emergency After a Series of Multiple Fatality FiresFire Administrator Chief Greg Cade is declaring a national fire emergency in the wake of several major fire incidents in U.S. cities. Since Thanksgiving 2008, there have been more than 158 fatal fires in the United States resulting in over 200 fire fatalities.

Tips for the heating seasonResidential fires are most common in December and January. Home heating equipment is often to blame. Be sure that fireplaces and wood stoves have at least 36 inches of clearance from flammable surfaces and proper floor support. Have chimneys inspected annually and cleaned by licensed professionals.
