- Demo: Glazing for Depth and Unification in Oil Painting, 11AM-12:30PM. Ages: 16 and up. Jackie Afram discusses the use of glazing in oil painting to add depth and unify elements within the painting. - Workshop: Drawing Animals & their Habitats, 1PM-2PM. Ages: 9-11 years old. Learn to use basic shapes and lines to draw animals, plants and cloud formations with instructors Liz Macklin and Jocelyn Hunn. Students will start with line drawings in pencil and explore how to suggest movement and add texture and the effects of light. - Workshop: Sketch & Paint with Elegant Writer Pen, 2PM-3PM. Ages: 10 and up. Linda Maldonado invites you to try out a fun way to capture quick sketches with a splash of watercolor effect. Once you try this out, you can use the technique at home and on vacation! Min: 4, Max: 8. Materials fee ($10) covers your Elegant Writer Pen, a watercolor brush, and paper to use during the session. - Workshop: Poetry/Art Connection—Integration & Inspiration, 1PM-3PM. Ages: All. Maggie Newman will discuss the importance of writing and painting in the moment—without judging what you do or write. She will provide examples from her poetry and art and encourage participants to write or paint from stories about their experiences. TUESDAY, MARCH 27 - Art Show Open: 10AM-2PM
- Paint-Out: Plein Air Paint-Out, 10AM-1PM. Ages: All. Meet on the front porch of the Hendry House and join Jane McElvany Coonce, long-time instructor for Arlington Adult Education, and other artists to paint in the plein air fashion, that is, painting outside. Jane will do a demo in oils for all who are interested. Artists should bring their painting supplies and a portable easel. Registered participants will receive a suggested supply list. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28 - Art Show Open: 11AM-5PM
- Workshop: Watercolor Painting on Yupo, 11AM-1PM. Ages: 14 and up. Instructors Sandra Hill and Marie Baumann will demonstrate the pros and cons of painting with watercolors on Yupo, a plastic "paper." Get rid of your fear and hesitation by learning tricks (such as wiping off your paint and starting over!) and how you can create fabulous effects. We’ll cover painting techniques, such as "splash and run" to create abstracts or the base of a more representational painting; and a more deliberate planned approach, both incorporating texturing with rubber stamps, paper towels, brayers, plastic wrap, etc. Instructors will provide Yupo (for those who don’t have it) and a variety of texturing materials. Participants should bring watercolors, brushes, a pencil, ruler, and water container, and may also bring their own texturing materials (such as: doilies, rubberized shelf liner, bubble wrap, etc). - Artist Talk: Portraiture, 2PM-3PM. Ages: 16 and up. Nan Morrison, artist and docent at the National Gallery of Art, shows that looking at portraits is a fun way to learn about political leaders, renowned artists, historic events, cultural differences and religion. Portraiture is and continues to be one of the most revered and popular styles of artistic expression. This 45-minute power point presentation celebrates the educational value of portraiture. - Treature Hunt for Kids: Fort C.F. Smith Treasure Hunt, 3:30PM-5PM. Ages: 5-12, accompanied by adult. Todd Parker invites you to come explore civil war era Fort CF Smith. Learn about the role of the Fort during the war by participating in a Treasure Hunt that visits different parts of historic Fort CF Smith. Each participant will be given a "passport" to find clues, answer questions, and make drawings about the construction and use of the Fort during the civil war and its connection to other forts in protecting Washington, DC. - Artist Talk: Painting Architectural Subjects, 11AM-12:30PM. Ages: 14 and up. Tony Neville will provide an illustrated talk using the examples of the masters and some of his own paintings. - Artist Talk: Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, 2PM-3:30PM. Ages: 16 and up. Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin were friends, housemates briefly in Arles, France, competitors, and giants of Post Impressionist art Rusty Lynn explores how both were influenced by Impressionism and Symbolism, yet their backgrounds, religion, education, and personalities make for fascinating differences in their art.
