Do the public areas of your neighborhood make a positive contribution to its attractiveness?
Do you have outstanding tree specimens in the neighborhood which ought to receive County recognition?
Does your Association area have a neighborhood “tree walk” so residents can see outstanding examples of Arlington’s green canopy in their own neighborhood?

Volunteers removing invasive plants from a large tree If you can’t say “yes” to each of these questions, you may want to serve on the Arlington County Beautification Committee, giving your neighborhood the opportunity to have an enhanced voice in the beautification of our community, and especially your own part of Arlington.

The County’s Beautification Committee is seeking individuals who would like to help make their community even more attractive and inviting through a public education and recognition program focused upon the “green environment.” The Committee as a whole meets only a few times during the year. Most of the work is done at the convenience of the volunteers. Working with the Natural Resources Program Coordinator for Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources, this Committee:

Advises on the planting and maintaining of landscaped public areas such as medians, entryways, and vest pocket parks; the emphasis being citizen-initiated projects.

We are seeking volunteers to elicit greater involvement of citizen associations in the development and maintenance of these efforts. With help from this committee one might write a newsletter article and/or make a presentation to a community group. There are many community groups in Arlington that would be very interested in this subject. We hope to increase the number of citizen initiated projects submitted for consideration.
Recognizes Arlington businesses and other commercial and professional properties, and non-profit organizations (e.g. churches) that have displayed particularly effective landscaping installation and maintenance through the Landscape Recognition Program.
The committee is seeking nominations for the next award cycle. Committee volunteers will visit nominated sites and assess the properties for their contributions to the beautification of Arlington. Awardees will be recognized at an Arlington County Board meeting.
Recognizes significant examples of Arlington’s green canopy through the County’s Notable and Neighborhood Tree Program; Participates in the county Arbor Day activities.

Trees on public or private land may be nominated in categories of size, historic interest or uniqueness of species, with outstanding examples receiving special recognition in an Arbor Day ceremony. One program's objective is to educate citizens about the importance of our trees and their ecological sustainability in the landscape.
Would you like to help develop a brochure for Arlingtonians about this program? Or would you like to help develop a Tree Walk for your neighborhood, if it does not already have one? This includes locating and helping collate information about significant trees growing in your Civic Association area, and helping develop a written narrative and a species location map for the “walk.” Such material could be disseminated through your Association website or newsletter, as well as the county's website.
Helps with a speaking engagement program for community groups.

Do you have the computer expertise to convert existing slides to a Powerpoint format for presentations? If so, you could make a real difference for a lot of people. And/or would you like to volunteer as a speaker for those presentations?
