Four heavily traveled County intersections are outfitted with PhotoRED light cameras.
- Cameras were activated in June 2010
- There was a 30-day awareness period. During this time, violators received a warning.
- After the awareness period, motorists caught running red lights at these intersections are required to pay a $50 fine.
- The infraction is treated as a civil offense, such as a parking ticket, and will not go on the offender’s driving record.
The intersections are:
- Northbound North Lynn Street at Eastbound Lee Highway
- Southbound Fort Myer Drive at Westbound Lee Highway
- Westbound Washington Boulevard at Lee Highway
- Northbound North Glebe Road at North Fairfax Drive
Factors used to determine the intersections to be equipped with the cameras include:
- Accident rate at the intersection
- Rate of red light violations at the intersection
- Ability of officers to safely apprehend violators at the intersection
Under Virginia state code, the County is authorized to install PhotoRED cameras at up to 20 intersections.
No traffic delays are expected during installation of the lights.
